The Last Kingdom, Serpent-Breath, the Sword of Uhtred
Uhtred of Bebbanburg, born the son of a Saxon nobleman but captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own, is forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing. His loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane?
A natural warrior, Uhtred is a leader of men, fearless and instinctive. Bound by oath to the king, he plays his part in Alfred’s attempts at uniting England into one kingdom in the face of Dane invasions. After Alfred’s death, his children Edward and Aethelflaed pursue their father’s dream, and Uhtred is drawn back into the family politics as he joins the service of Edward and falls in love with Aethelflaed. On a quest to reclaim his birthright, his homeland of Bebbanburg taken from him by his treacherous uncle, Aelfric, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path if he is to play his part in the birth of a nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.
Uhtred can easily be spotted on the battlefield wielding his unique amber-pommeled sword, Serpent-Breath, as he strikes down his enemies. Destiny is all.
